Marguerite McDonald, M.D.


Marguerite McDonald, M.D. is a respected and highly esteemed authority and pioneer in the field of refractive surgery. She is credited with performing the first excimer laser surgery in the world, in 1987, and in 1981, was one of the first surgeons to perform radial keratotomy. Dr. McDonald is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tulane University and director of the Southern Vision Institute in New Orleans. She has published 273 abstracts, 48 book chapters, and 226 articles on various refractive topics in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals.

She graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons with internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital as well as a fellowship in corneal and external diseases at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans.

Dr. McDonald has been the principal investigator of three National Eye Institute grants for the study of refractive surgery and has been honored by selection to the editorial boards of several publications, including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Refractive and Corneal Surgery. In 1997 she was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
